Heritage Trail/Stoltz Principle Route-Dubuque, IA

Sunday, March 25

Well don' let the Heritage Trail name in the title fool you. I thought with my previous experience last fall that I wouldn't really look forward to getting back on that trail...until today! I started on The Stoltz Principle Route at The Mines of Spain park on the south end of Dubuque. Beautiful park that overlooks the Mississippi river. There are miles of hiking trails here but none for the bike. I learned that last fall. I wanted to start there anyway because it was a nice day and I really needed to get out on the bike. I seen a trail labeled "Bike Trail" just outside the park so I thought I would take that.

I started out by the Julien Dubuque monument and rode down the hill. I was already thinking it was a bummer because I had to stay on the pavement. I can do that on an old beat up Huffy. Haro was just not made for the street. I decided to head over by the river where I seen a dirt trail leading off toward the water. No luck...it was just going to the water and that was it.

I headed back north on the "Bike Trail" which was a little road heading behind a residential area. I was taken literally downtown Dubuque. following the "trail" signs all the way. When I hit Clock Tower Square I decided to head home. I live up a very steep hill so I was thinking I would take the 4th street elevator up. No luck there either...doesn't open until next week. Guess I will keep my $1.50 and huff it up.

After today I'm ready to hit the dirt of the flat Heritage Trail north of town.

Riding through town today I'm thinking I better consult with the two local bike shops to see if there is ANYWHERE to ride for real close by.

Man, I'm Missing Austin!

I'm Missing Austin... It's cold here in Iowa. Freezing rain and snow right this second. I was just thinking about how long it is going to be before I can ride on a regular basis living here now. Bummer. Let me to remember how I worked so close to Walnut Creek Park in Austin that last year at this time I would go over and ride during my lunch hour. I had plenty of time to get there, ride for a half hour and be back at work before my break was up. It was really easy to stop and burn an hour or two after work, right on the way home.

So I sit here in the warm house...thinking about riding. I may have to take up winter riding here. I guess it never occurred to me since I took the sport up in Austin. Anyway...Here are some of my memories in a slide show...
